After reading Chapter 1 as well as the introduction to "the valley of ashes" at the beginning of Chapter 2:
1) Fill in the note-taking organizer on the settings of West Egg, East Egg, and the Valley of ashes with key words or phrases that Fitzgerald uses to describe these settings.
2) Any literary devices used in your examples? why are they effective? Analyze EFFECTS and PURPOSE (IOC prep!!).
3) How does the setting of the Valley of Ashes juxtapose from Tom and Daisy's house, introduced in chapter 1 (be specific)? What is Fitzgerald highlighting by placing these settings in back-to-back chapters?
4) Can you think of modern-day examples of this type of class disparity and/or disparate living conditions of people living close together?
