We have now entered our study of Langston Hughes's longer, more complex poems; these poems will be the candidates for your IOC examinations this Spring. This means that you will need to know them very well, as one of them could end up being worth 15% of your IB grade in this course!
Therefore, in order to prepare for the IOCs, you will work in groups of 2-3 to present on one of the following poems and be graded on your presentation using the IOC criteria.
THE POEMS:
"Freedom Train" - 2
"Open Letter to the South" - 2
"Negro Mother" - 2
"Let America Be American Again" - 2
"Advertisement for the Waldorf Astoria" - 3
IOC POEM ANALYSIS & PRESENTATION TASK
THE STEPS:
1. Annotate your poem THOROUGHLY. Make sure you are commenting on IDEAS conveyed and not just labeling devices.
2. Complete the ''Big 5" Analysis for your poem (Purpose + Audience, Themes, Tone, Structure, Devices)
3. Pull out 2-3 main themes from your poem and pick multiple examples (textual evidence) to support these themes.
4. Prepare an outline for your poem. Make sure you have a complete introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each body paragraph/theme should have many pieces of evidence and devices that you can ANALYZE fully to explain WHAT these show, HOW, and for what PURPOSE & EFFECTS on readers.
** Use the sample outline on "Mother to Son" as a guide, as well as the structure handouts you were given
5. Present your poems. You will be graded on what you SAY, but you will also need to submit a written outline (which you can project and use as a guide for your presentation). This outline and your insights on these poems will form the basis of your understanding of these IOC texts -- be sure you are thorough, detailed, and analytical! Each person should speak for about 7-10 minutes (10=maximum!).
** Make sure you divide up the analysis and speaking points so that each student has the potential to achieve full marks on each criterion. Someone presenting only the introduction and/or conclusion, for example, would obviously not be able to score very well on B: Analyzing!
Please Note:
- Please read or play a recording of the poem at the beginning of your presentation.
- You will be graded individually on the IOC criteria.
- You will be timed; there is an absolute MAXIMUM of 10 minutes per person --practice, as this is part of Criterion C: Organizing
- You will be asked questions following your presentation
