Millions of young men went to war, experiencing appalling conditions in the trenches and witnessing horrible atrocities and deaths. Many people took to expressing the horrors they saw on the battlefield through writing, and many famous poets emerged at this time. Wilfred Owen is one of the most famous poets to capture WW1 in writing; he regularly depicts the difficulties soldiers faced and showing readers the war’s harsh realities. His most famous poem, “Dulce et Decorum Est”, challenges the purpose of war as it describes the difficulties of gas and trenches that WW1 soldiers face on their journey and the nightmares that haunt them afterwards.
